Start where it matters. The Raiders took Michael Penix Jr. to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Thomas. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th overall pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Worthy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ruke Orhorhoro at Round 3, Pick 13 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Max Melton in slot 112 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Javion Cohen at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A slide stopped in pick No. 190, with Nathan Thomas worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They let Blake Watson come to them and pounced at pick 234. The roster fit checks out.
