The Patriots bet the future on Penix Jr.. The board says B-.

After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Michael Penix Jr. is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Tupuola-Fetui.

The Paul pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.8 · Pick 8 · Michael Penix Jr. · QB · rank 9
Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 47
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Patrick Paul. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 40
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Guyton at Round 2, Pick 2, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
They paid up for Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 43rd pick when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Ja'Lynn Polk · WR · rank 55
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 68, where Ja'Lynn Polk graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
Fair-plus on Cooper Beebe, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
They paid a round early for Khyree Jackson in slot 90, more than the board wanted. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 112
A premium they did not need to pay, Leonard Taylor III a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 143
Ben Sinnott in pick 139 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 166
The board had Kitan Oladapo higher than Round 6, Pick 7, and the safety fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Zion Tupuola-Fetui · DE-EDGE · rank 169
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at pick No. 188 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Jawhar Jordan · RB · rank 209
Nice patience on Jawhar Jordan, who had no business lasting to the 224th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Taulia Tagovailoa · QB · rank 227
Nothing to complain about; Taulia Tagovailoa went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
