The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Jayden Daniels, and the whole operation now runs on his development. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Reaching for Thomas left real value on the table behind him. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 6
In pick No. 5 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 33
Troy Franklin at Round 2, Pick 4 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 37
Jordan Morgan at the 37th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
The board had cheaper options than Edgerrin Cooper at slot 40, and it noticed. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kingsley Suamataia in the 67th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 74
No edge and no loss on Cade Stover in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Max Melton · CB · rank 77
Max Melton in No. 78 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 96
Brenden Rice in pick 100 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 144
Trevor Keegan at Round 5, Pick 3 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 163
They jumped the gun on Xavier Thomas, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 222
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Magee. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
