Somebody took the Patriots to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
Whatever Drake Maye becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will need Stover to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Malik Nabers at No. 3, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
In pick No. 5 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
A reach for T'Vondre Sweat in slot 36; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cade Stover in the 70th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had cheaper options than Blake Corum at the 71st pick, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
