The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Smael Mondon Jr., the No. 109 name on the board, in pick 209.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Shedeur Sanders gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Reaching for Reed-Adams left real value on the table behind him. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
In the 12th overall pick they get an every-down engine for the run game, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
They let Jalon Walker come to them and pounced at slot 43. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tyleik Williams in the 74th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Barrett Carter at pick No. 148 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Kevin Winston Jr. at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Ar'maj Reed-Adams in pick 186 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Smael Mondon Jr. in No. 209 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
