Whoever sat across the table from the Packers should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
It is not that Williams is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. They will need Harris to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
The Vonn Bell pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Tyler Guyton went about where he belonged in the 33rd overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
A big swing on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick No. 41, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
D.J. James in slot 57 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Javon Bullard at Round 3, Pick 1 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They did well to land Roman Wilson in pick 88, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on DeWayne Carter at the 95th pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, MarShawn Lloyd at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A want over a need in No. 132: James Williams adds a safety while tight end keeps waiting.
They paid sticker price for Cam Hart in pick No. 135, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tidy little value on Christian Jones in the 203rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
They talked themselves into Marcus Harris at slot 217, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Taulia Tagovailoa in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nothing to complain about; Joshua Cephus went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
