The tape said wait; the Chiefs did not. Carson Steele went at the 226th pick, a good 99 picks before the board was ready.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Harden. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. Roy Lopez gives the group a proven body among the projects.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Darius Robinson at pick 35, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at pick No. 64 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Johnny Wilson in Round 3, Pick 27 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Blake Fisher in No. 95, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Tommy Eichenberg in slot 132; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Luke McCaffrey slipping to the 159th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dwight McGlothern at the 173rd pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Carson Steele at pick No. 226 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Myles Harden at slot 252 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
