Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Cam Hart, the No. 94 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 136th pick. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 8 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They read the board right and Amarius Mims was the payoff at slot 34. A need, and now a little less of one.
Roman Wilson in pick No. 43 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Spencer Rattler at the 68th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy bit of business in the 104th pick, where Trey Benson graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A cornerback of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Malik Mustapha at Round 6, Pick 7 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They barely believed it either: Jared Wiley still on the board at pick 229. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
