The Cowboys did not so much draft Jamaree Caldwell as overpay for him, 103 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a centerpiece for the ground game at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
DJ Campbell in the 42nd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good price on Tyleik Williams in the 75th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Harold Perkins Jr. still on the board at the Round 5 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; Jamaree Caldwell in slot 169 says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Taylen Green this early at Round 5, Pick 32. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Raheim Sanders in Round 5, Pick 33 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
The board had Xavier Nwankpa higher than slot 186, and the safety fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Kyren Lacy at the 209th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
