Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Eagles spent slot 223 on Xavier Thomas, a name most had 32 spots down the list.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 22 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 32nd pick they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Tavion Sanders at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Zach Frazier in Round 2, Pick 32; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Junior Colson is a better player than pick No. 89 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They read the board right and Michael Hall Jr. was the payoff at No. 97. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malik Washington in No. 116 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took MarShawn Lloyd at par in slot 127, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in pick 139, with Cole Bishop worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Chau Smith-Wade went about where he belonged in the 160th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Joe Milton III in the Round 5 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid sticker price for Zion Tupuola-Fetui in the 171st pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaylen Wright slid further than he should have, and pick No. 175 is lovely value for the running back. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Curtis Jacobs. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They reached into another round for Xavier Thomas, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
