The phones were a trap the Eagles kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Hunt pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman still on the board. Baker has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Landing Benson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
They did well to land Troy Fautanu in slot 34, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Ja'Tavion Sanders at par in the 50th pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 57; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Malachi Corley in No. 68 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy bit of business in the 85th overall pick, where Trey Benson graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
By-the-book stuff, Tykee Smith at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Khyree Jackson in pick 104, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jalyx Hunt at S-EDGE with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman open.
Nice patience on Beau Brade, who had no business lasting to slot 126. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jordan Travis a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
They read the board right and Kris Abrams-Draine was the payoff at the 136th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Chau Smith-Wade went about where he belonged in No. 160. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Javon Baker at pick No. 171 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Curtis Jacobs in pick 178 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
