It is a puzzling start. The Chiefs had tight end, quarterback and other spots to solve and reached instead for Jalon Kilgore, a cornerback, at pick No. 109.
The Bernard value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Virgil reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 9 they get a three-down second-level presence at fair value.
Colton Hood in pick 29 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They jumped the gun on Lee Hunter, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
Germie Bernard slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jalon Kilgore at cornerback with tight end, quarterback and other spots open.
A big swing on Reggie Virgil at slot 148, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Aamil Wagner in Round 5, Pick 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Bryce Boettcher at the 177th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Le'Veon Moss at pick No. 210 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Fair-plus on Jadon Canady, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
