The Chiefs went off the board in a big way for Fa'alili Fa'amoe, 46 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They will answer for taking cornerback early while tight end, quarterback and other spots went begging.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 9 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 29th overall pick they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value. A real need, handled.
Nothing to complain about; Chris Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Domonique Orange in slot 74 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Jalon Kilgore while clear needs at tight end, quarterback and other spots sat open.
A wild overpay on Reggie Virgil in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kevin Coleman Jr. in No. 169. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reach on Ephesians Prysock in the 176th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They reached into another round for Fa'alili Fa'amoe, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
