The board owed the Eagles one, and it paid up: Matt Goncalves, the No. 104 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 4 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The cost of the Chambers reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get a sticky cover corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
They jumped the gun on Christian Haynes, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
A reach on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick 53; the board had better options right there. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Blake Corum slipping to the 98th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 134 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Luke McCaffrey slid further than he should have, and the 161st overall pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steele Chambers in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
