If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Dolphins, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Dixon. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 29 they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Xavier Worthy at Round 2, Pick 30. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Max Melton slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No edge and no loss on Christian Mahogany in the 93rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
McKinnley Jackson at pick No. 126 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and Luke McCaffrey was the payoff at No. 158. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jordan Travis in the 164th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A tidy little value on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 184th pick, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They let Daijun Edwards come to them and pounced at the Round 6 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 6, Pick 26 with a little surplus value in Myles Cole. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Drake Nugent a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Johnny Dixon in pick No. 218 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Proctor. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
