The Commanders did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Trey Benson fell into slot 141. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback and interior defensive lineman. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Every board in the league had Braswell lower, and that gap is the story.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.4
· Pick 4
· Caleb Williams
· QB
· rank 2
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
R2.3
· Pick 35
· Chop Robinson
· DE-EDGE
· rank 35
By-the-book stuff, Chop Robinson at the 35th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Chris Braswell
· LB-EDGE
· rank 57
This one needs a full-page explanation: Chris Braswell in pick No. 36, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Jackson Powers-Johnson
· C
· rank 51
A reach for Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 40th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.2
· Pick 66
· Tyler Guyton
· OT
· rank 39
The board fumbled Tyler Guyton all the way to Round 3, Pick 2, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Cooper Beebe
· OG
· rank 78
They jumped the gun on Cooper Beebe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.27
· Pick 90
· Xavier Legette
· WR
· rank 36
Xavier Legette at No. 90 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Maason Smith
· DT-EDGE
· rank 87
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with cornerback and interior defensive lineman open.
R4.2
· Pick 102
· Junior Colson
· LB
· rank 76
Junior Colson in the 102nd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.5
· Pick 141
· Trey Benson
· RB
· rank 72
They barely believed it either: Trey Benson still on the board at slot 141. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.6
· Pick 181
· Nathan Thomas
· OT
· rank 176
A clean, defensible pick in the 181st overall pick with a little surplus value in Nathan Thomas. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.3
· Pick 223
· AJ Barner
· TE
· rank 193
Circle this one: AJ Barner at Round 7, Pick 3 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
