The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Power Echols, 30 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
That Jones Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Jonah Savaiinaea in No. 41, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jason Marshall Jr. at the 72nd overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Emery Jones Jr. reach pick 86 and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach for Jordan Burch in Round 4, Pick 7; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They went early on Bear Alexander in slot 144, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Bryson Nesbit at No. 218 is the proof. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Duce Chestnut in the Round 7 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Damien Martinez in the 236th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A big swing on Power Echols at slot 256, well ahead of any board in the building. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
