Washington Commanders

The Commanders left with their quarterback, and a A- to match.

The board owed the Commanders one, and it paid up: Max Melton, the No. 111 name on the board, sitting there at No. 223 like a gift left on the doorstep. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.

Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The phones were where this weekend was really won. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

The Van Pran reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. It is not that Stover is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first.

Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.8 · Pick 8 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In pick No. 8 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 14
They barely believed it either: Dallas Turner still on the board at the 36th pick. It fills a real need, too.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 34
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kamren Kinchens at the 43rd pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 58
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at the 58th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Sedrick Van Pran · C · rank 90
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sedrick Van Pran in No. 67, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.10 · Pick 74 · Cade Stover · TE-EDGE · rank 94
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cade Stover at TE-EDGE with wide receiver and interior defensive lineman open.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Jonathon Brooks · RB · rank 62
Jonathon Brooks in pick No. 100 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 100
No drama and no debate, Blake Fisher went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 2. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 143
No edge and no loss on Ben Sinnott in pick 141; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 175
Roger Rosengarten at the Round 6 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Max Melton · CB · rank 111
Somehow Max Melton was still sitting there in pick 223, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
