Whoever sat across the table from the Chargers should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend.
Bullock at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Shipley reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Xavier Legette at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Kris Jenkins went about where he belonged in the 40th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick 41 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tidy little value on Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 24, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
No edge and no loss on Ruke Orhorhoro in pick No. 62; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Payton Wilson in slot 67, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Calen Bullock in No. 69 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Mike Sainristil in pick No. 93 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Tykee Smith at slot 94, value and slot in agreement. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Michael Pratt at the 99th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Will Shipley at pick 106 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Braelon Allen at No. 139, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Michael Barrett in Round 6, Pick 8 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
