The Chargers did not so much draft Jayson Jones as overpay for him, 140 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter.
A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
That Bishop pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 1 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 8 they get an island corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 28 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
Fair-plus on Xavier Worthy, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for Jonathon Brooks in Round 2, Pick 13; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Blake Corum at the 72nd pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Leonard Taylor III in No. 77. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Ruke Orhorhoro at Round 3, Pick 15 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Junior Colson at the 108th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board had cheaper options than Ainias Smith at slot 145, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: Cole Bishop still on the board at the 172nd pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Joe Milton III in the Round 6 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Reuben Fatheree II a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
J.J. Weaver at pick 216 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jordan Jefferson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value said wait; Xavier Thomas in pick No. 221 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jayson Jones in the 229th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Isaiah Davis at the 236th pick, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
