Call it larceny. Nicholas Singleton sat on the board until the 172nd pick, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
Martin has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Luther Burden III and all.
Pick-by-Pick
Luther Burden III at No. 32 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Will Johnson in pick 44 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They let Cameron Williams come to them and pounced at the 46th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They jumped the gun on T.J. Sanders, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Kamari Ramsey in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jonah Savaiinaea in Round 3, Pick 13, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Quinshon Judkins still on the board at pick No. 98. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Sonny Styles at the 99th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Circle this one: Xavier Restrepo at the 100th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let a running back like TreVeyon Henderson reach slot 111 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Tacario Davis in the 113th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Garrett Nussmeier all the way to No. 126, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A wild overpay on Nick Martin in pick 133, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Armand Membou at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Dane Key in Round 5, Pick 19, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steal is underselling it; Blake Miller at pick No. 169 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Gunnar Helm in slot 170; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nicholas Singleton at No. 172 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Somehow Xavier Nwankpa was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 13, and they pounced on premier safety value. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They robbed the room for Nic Anderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Gentry Williams at pick 225 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
