The Dolphins did not so much draft Taulia Tagovailoa as overpay for him, 44 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
The Cooper Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
Kamren Kinchens at Round 2, Pick 12 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 56 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A conviction pick on Ja'Lynn Polk at the 58th pick that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Julian Pearl in slot 200 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Taulia Tagovailoa at pick 231 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Brevyn Spann-Ford went about where he belonged in the 239th pick. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy bit of business in the 242nd overall pick, where Ryan Cooper Jr. graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A reach on Daequan Hardy in slot 243; the board had better options right there. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
