The Dolphins did not so much draft Taulia Tagovailoa as overpay for him, 44 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

The Cooper Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.12 · Pick 44 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 56
Kamren Kinchens at Round 2, Pick 12 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 59
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 57
Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 56 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Ja'Lynn Polk · WR · rank 71
A conviction pick on Ja'Lynn Polk at the 58th pick that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.25 · Pick 200 · Julian Pearl · OT-EDGE · rank 212
Julian Pearl in slot 200 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Taulia Tagovailoa · QB · rank 275
Taulia Tagovailoa at pick 231 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.19 · Pick 239 · Brevyn Spann-Ford · TE · rank 237
No drama and no debate, Brevyn Spann-Ford went about where he belonged in the 239th pick. The roster fit checks out.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Ryan Cooper Jr. · CB · rank 229
A tidy bit of business in the 242nd overall pick, where Ryan Cooper Jr. graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Daequan Hardy · CB · rank 256
A reach on Daequan Hardy in slot 243; the board had better options right there. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Jackson Sirmon · LB · rank 268
The board had cheaper options than Jackson Sirmon at pick 251, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
