The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Simpson. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Troy Franklin at slot 34, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Patrick Paul at par in the 68th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Jaylen Wright went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
DJ James at pick 103 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board fumbled MarShawn Lloyd all the way to No. 137, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Jaylin Simpson at pick No. 180 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Ty'Ron Hopper at the 193rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
They will replay Caedan Wallace at Round 7, Pick 11 for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
