The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Cam Skattebo slide 90 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
The Zuhn III reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 19 they get a workhorse for the backfield at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Tyler Warren at pick 47 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jack Bech at pick No. 76 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They did well to land Jayden Higgins in Round 3, Pick 14, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Omarion Hampton in the 84th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They let Dylan Fairchild come to them and pounced at the Round 4 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Darius Alexander in slot 114 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trey Zuhn III well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Smael Mondon Jr. in Round 5, Pick 31, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cody Simon at the 172nd pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A safety of that caliber at the 174th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Simeon Barrow Jr. is a better player than pick 190 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: Cam Skattebo still on the board at No. 195. It fills a real need, too.
Cam Jackson at pick No. 211 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaishawn Barham slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
