You build a draft on nights like this. Sataoa Laumea had no business being available in the Round 5 slot, and the Chargers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The cost of the Vidal reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 8 they get a disruptor off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at pick 37 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: T'Vondre Sweat still on the board at No. 69. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
DJ James at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Sataoa Laumea in the 139th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
A slide stopped in the 142nd overall pick, with Cedric Gray worth more than the price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Nice patience on Walter Rouse, who had no business lasting to Round 6, Pick 8. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Kimani Vidal a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
