The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Packers watched Bru McCoy slide 31 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. With quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get a centerfielder for the defense. More want than need.
Jonah Elliss in the 51st pick is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Kalen King went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Fair-plus on Patrick Paul, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at slot 83 for years; that is how good the value is. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Blake Corum at Round 3, Pick 30 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 119th overall pick on Cedric Gray with quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved.
A straight-up fair deal on Cedric Johnson at pick No. 142, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Theo Wease in Round 5, Pick 38, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They let Christian Jones come to them and pounced at slot 197. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board fumbled Joshua Gray all the way to pick 217, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steal is underselling it; Bru McCoy at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Turner Corcoran at the 226th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
BJ Mayes at pick No. 239 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked Khordae Sydnor enough to skip the value, taking him in the 240th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
