You build a draft on nights like this. Jake Majors had no business being available in the Round 5 slot, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The final tally is a middling C+.
The cost of the Williams reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
If Ashton Jeanty and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy bit of business in No. 18, where Ashton Jeanty graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tate Ratledge at pick No. 36 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Derrick Harmon reach pick 51 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Somehow Jalon Walker was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Pat Bryant in the 138th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Quinshon Judkins all the way to slot 148, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Steal is underselling it; Jake Majors at Round 5, Pick 33 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cody Simon in the 173rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on CJ West. A need, and now a little less of one.
Gentry Williams at pick No. 205 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Clay Webb at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
