The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Vikings spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The Jefferson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
J.J. McCarthy at slot 11 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at No. 42 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid up for Javon Foster at the 109th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A big swing on Jordan Jefferson at pick 130, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach for Javion Cohen in the 156th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Jaylan Ford at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They paid sticker price for Caedan Wallace in pick No. 182, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on Zion Tupuola-Fetui in Round 6, Pick 15; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, Solomon Byrd in slot 229 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
