Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent the Round 7 slot on Reggie Grimes II, a name most had 63 spots down the list.
They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. However the rest shakes out, Harris at that price is a win they earned. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
They talked themselves into Trevor Etienne at Round 3, Pick 11, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
They liked Noah Fifita enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Earnest Greene III at pick 107. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Aireontae Ersery. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Denver Harris slid further than he should have, and the 125th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Sonny Styles at par in the 126th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A wild overpay on Jaishawn Barham in the 139th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jasheen Davis at No. 155 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They jumped the gun on Akheem Mesidor, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A reach for Josaiah Stewart in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A conviction pick on Tony Grimes at pick 178 that the board grades a round light. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
The board had cheaper options than Deshawn Pace at Round 6, Pick 30, and it noticed. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A big swing on Deontae Lawson at pick No. 221, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Reggie Grimes II at the 222nd overall pick, and the board is aghast. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
