The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Getting Melton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Troy Franklin is a better player than pick 42 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Paul. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Javon Baker at par in Round 3, Pick 23, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Braelon Allen at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Max Melton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No drama and no debate, Anthony Gould went about where he belonged in pick No. 137. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Tip Reiman in No. 180; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 193, where Jha'Quan Jackson graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A tidy little value on Frank Gore Jr. in the 231st overall pick, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
