There is conviction, and then there is this. The Chiefs took LaDarius Henderson a full 36 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end, quarterback and other spots. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
However the rest shakes out, Smith at that price is a win they earned. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on Payton Wilson at pick No. 64, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Maason Smith with tight end, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
A real head-scratcher, LaDarius Henderson in the 133rd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylen Wright. It fills a real need, too.
Kitan Oladapo at Round 5, Pick 36 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
A big swing on Kingsley Eguakun at the 210th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Walter Rouse in the 250th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
