The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Josh Newton slide 63 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it. Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Zach Frazier at pick 59 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Devontez Walker. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Maason Smith all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Good price on Audric Estime in No. 127, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jordan Magee in Round 5, Pick 38. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Josh Newton at slot 216 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
JD Bertrand slipping to the 233rd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dillon Johnson at the 244th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
