The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
However the rest shakes out, Coleman at that price is a win they earned. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Patriots indulged a want in Smith while a need in edge rusher and interior defensive lineman stayed open.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Jayden Daniels in pick 8; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jordan Morgan at pick No. 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Worthy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They will replay Keon Coleman at the 68th pick for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
