The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Kamran James at the Round 6 slot regardless, 138 picks early.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Getting Taaffe where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 31 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
You do not let a linebacker like Anthony Hill Jr. reach slot 63 and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Michael Taaffe at the 95th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nothing to complain about; Bryce Lance went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dametrious Crownover at pick No. 131 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Dae'Quan Wright in No. 187 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached a country mile for George Gumbs Jr. at Round 6, Pick 10, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ephesians Prysock is a better player than pick No. 202 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They paid up for Aiden Fisher at the 207th pick when waiting would have done the job. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A big swing on Kamran James at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Jeremiah Wright in pick 212, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Circle this one: Dane Key at slot 247 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
