When a board-topper like Keon Sabb slides to pick No. 217, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Christian Darrisaw leading the way.
The cost of the Jackson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
In the end it comes back to Shavon Revel Jr., and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an island corner. More want than need.
Tate Ratledge in Round 2, Pick 6 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jihaad Campbell at slot 69 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A conviction pick on Donovan Jackson at the 77th overall pick that the board grades a round light. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jordan James at No. 97 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.

They will replay Barrett Carter at pick 143 for years; that is how good the value is. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
