The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Call it a C and check back in two years.
The Jordan reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
However the rest shakes out, Wilson at that price is a win they earned. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.11
· Pick 11
· JC Latham
· OT
· rank 15
JC Latham at Round 1, Pick 11 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R1.23
· Pick 23
· J.J. McCarthy
· QB
· rank 29
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Troy Fautanu
· OT
· rank 22
Troy Fautanu at the 36th overall pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Chris Braswell
· LB-EDGE
· rank 44
No drama and no debate, Chris Braswell went about where he belonged in the 40th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Mike Sainristil
· CB
· rank 75
Mike Sainristil in No. 67 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.14
· Pick 78
· Payton Wilson
· LB
· rank 57
The board fumbled Payton Wilson all the way to slot 78, and they scooped it up. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Ben Sinnott
· TE
· rank 129
Ben Sinnott at pick No. 100 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.3
· Pick 139
· Jha'Quan Jackson
· WR
· rank 179
A big swing on Jha'Quan Jackson at pick 139, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.16
· Pick 152
· Javion Cohen
· OG
· rank 169
Javion Cohen at the 152nd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.31
· Pick 167
· Joe Milton III
· QB
· rank 200
Joe Milton III at Round 5, Pick 31 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
R7.2
· Pick 222
· Jawhar Jordan
· RB
· rank 279
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jawhar Jordan in slot 222, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
