There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Cowboys started one anyway for Phillip Webb, 128 picks ahead of schedule.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Paul Jr. pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a workhorse for the backfield, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Isaiah Bond at slot 33 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jake Majors at the 76th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malachi Moore at pick No. 102 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Circle this one: Chris Paul Jr. at Round 5, Pick 31 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Phillip Webb this early at the 170th overall pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jay Higgins at pick 173 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Michael Taaffe still on the board at the 186th pick. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Thor Griffith in No. 209, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Joey Slackman at slot 247 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
