Start where it matters. The Patriots took Jayden Daniels to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
The Jackson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The Sinnott reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
Patrick Paul at slot 38 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in Round 3, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Khyree Jackson at pick 76, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They jumped the gun on Christian Mahogany, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached a country mile for Ben Sinnott at the 98th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Kitan Oladapo at the 136th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at No. 182 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jha'Quan Jackson at pick 229 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
