Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chiefs spent pick 32 on Xavier Worthy, a name most had 24 spots down the list. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
That is a tight end worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a weapon on the perimeter, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They went early on Xavier Legette in the 64th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
DeWayne Carter at No. 95 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Andru Phillips is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No edge and no loss on Dallin Holker in the 158th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Walter Rouse in Round 5, Pick 36 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They let Trey Knox come to them and pounced at pick No. 252. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
