The Chargers bet big and early on Jack Westover, 65 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
That Johnson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Tyjae Spears gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a security blanket over the middle at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid up for Kris Jenkins at the 37th pick when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Zach Frazier at pick No. 38, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 5 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Isaac Guerendo. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Mason McCormick at the 139th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nice patience on Dillon Johnson, who had no business lasting to slot 183. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had cheaper options than Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at Round 6, Pick 9, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jalen Coker at the 223rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jack Westover this early at the Round 7 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
