The Packers spent real capital to be 38 picks early on Trey Benson, and the board is going to hold them to it. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Quinyon Mitchell in the 25th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Trey Benson at slot 58 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A big swing on Cole Bishop at pick No. 88, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Leonard Taylor III in pick 91 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
Theo Johnson at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
Layden Robinson at the 168th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid up for Tanor Bortolini at the 204th pick when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tyler Owens in No. 216 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
