Start where it matters. The Patriots took Jayden Daniels to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
The Simpson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Jayden Daniels and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 9 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
In No. 23 they get a building block for the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brian Thomas Jr. at the Round 2 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Payton Wilson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Andru Phillips in Round 4, Pick 3 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Theo Johnson at the 119th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
They took Tip Reiman at par in pick 177, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Jaylin Simpson all the way to the 180th pick, and they scooped it up. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A slide stopped in pick No. 193, with Isaiah Williams worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value with a capital V on Zion Tupuola-Fetui in the 230th overall pick, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Julian Pearl in Round 7, Pick 11 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
