Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent No. 245 on Jordan Strachan, a name most had 99 spots down the list. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Worthy at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. It is not that Brade is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 41st pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jonathon Brooks at the Round 2 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Fair-plus on Jaden Hicks, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Xavier Worthy in pick 91 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Beau Brade in the 126th overall pick leaves edge rusher, tight end and other spots for later.
The board fumbled Mason McCormick all the way to the 169th pick, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steele Chambers in Round 6, Pick 27 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jaylan Ford at pick No. 219 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Jordan Strachan at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Devin Leary in pick 255 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
