You build a draft on nights like this. CJ Allen had no business being available in slot 53, and the Bills did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They will need Caldwell to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They left with linebacker solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
CJ Allen in slot 53 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They let Josiah Trotter come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 1. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in the 82nd overall pick with a little surplus value in Domonique Orange. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Skyler Bell slipping to No. 97 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jalon Kilgore at the 118th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jakobe Thomas at pick No. 135 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jalen Farmer in pick 165 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jeff Caldwell at the Round 5 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
