If confidence were a draft strategy, the Chargers would have aced it. Carter Bradley at the 225th overall pick is 70 spots clear of where he belonged. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Barton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th pick they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board had cheaper options than Kris Jenkins at Round 2, Pick 5, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Graham Barton reach pick 69 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Leonard Taylor III in No. 110, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Mason McCormick in slot 140 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Trente Jones at pick No. 181 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for Carter Bradley at the 225th pick, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Jalen Coker at Round 7, Pick 33, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
