When the story of this class is written, it opens with Jordan Burch at the 141st pick, a reach of 54 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Stutsman pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still on the board.
That is a tight end worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 16th pick they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
You do not let a linebacker like Abdul Carter reach Round 2, Pick 4 and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Mykel Williams at the 60th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Danny Stutsman while clear needs at wide receiver, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Luke Lachey at pick No. 132 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan Burch this early at the 141st overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
