The Texans put a flag in the ground for Jamaree Caldwell, 171 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. The final tally is a middling C.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Hampton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
Grey Zabel at slot 16 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steal is underselling it; Omarion Hampton at pick 58 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Tate Ratledge worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jamaree Caldwell well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A big swing on Ricky White III at the 165th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value said wait; Shaun Dolac in pick No. 241 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
