You could see the war room lean forward. Jay Higgins at Round 7, Pick 19 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
They will need Horn Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 26th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope, even if it was a touch early.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Walter Nolen at Round 1, Pick 27 is the proof. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
In pick No. 29 they get a problem off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
A tidy little value on Harold Fannin Jr. in slot 39, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They read the board right and Isaiah Bond was the payoff at pick 41. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They robbed the room for Quinshon Judkins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Nicholas Singleton at the 202nd overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Jay Higgins all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jimmy Horn Jr. this early at pick No. 246. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
