There is reaching, and then there is Bub Means at the 187th overall pick. The Patriots jumped the board by 58 and dared it to prove them wrong.
McClellan falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value.
Xavier Legette in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at pick No. 43 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kiran Amegadjie in pick 68 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Spencer Rattler at the 74th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on Theo Johnson in slot 103, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Elijah Jones in the 137th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Garret Greenfield at No. 180 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bub Means. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Cedric Johnson at slot 193, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Jase McClellan here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
