The phones were a trap the Patriots kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. McCullough at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid sticker price for Tre Harris in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ashton Gillotte in slot 39. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Andrew Mukuba at the 66th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No edge and no loss on Trevor Etienne in pick 71; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dasan McCullough at Round 4, Pick 2. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Aydan White at No. 130 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Good price on Xavier Truss in pick No. 194, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
